Drought conditions are making a rapid comeback in Missouri.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows that nearly half of Missouri is experiencing some level of dry conditions. Several counties along the Kansas border, from Bates County down to the Arkansas border and over to Barry County, now have moderate drought conditions. The Kansas City area, along with large portions of northwest, western, and southeastern Missouri, are experiencing abnormally dry conditions, the next level down.

Four weeks ago, the drought was all but gone throughout the entire state.

Missouri has been under a drought alert since May of 2023, and the alert is set to expire September 1st. The state’s Drought Assessment Committee had recommended at its last meeting to not renew the alert after numerous rounds of heavy rainfall nearly wiped out the drought statewide. There’s no word yet if that will change.
