Rep. Richard Brown, R-Kansas City, has won his party’s nomination for Missouri lieutenant governor. His win means he will move on to the general election in November.

Brown said that he’s not in it to get the job – he’s running to do the job.

“Lieutenant governor is someone that sits at those tables with the Board of Economic Development,” he said. “You talk about housing in this state. The rent’s too high! We’ve got to do something about affordable housing units in this state and we have to have people there who really want to do something. Okay? We get lip service about ‘Oh yeah, we’re gonna do something.’ No you got to really want to do it.”

The assistant House minority floor leader said that he wants to prioritize the needs of everyday Missourians.

“You know, for too long, the needs of Missouri families have been ignored,” Brown said. “We’ve got to have somebody sitting at the table who’s going to speak for folks. That’s what the lieutenant governor of this state does. It’s an advocate for senior citizens.”

Brown addressed the media after his Tuesday night primary win, saying that he wants to advocate that Missouri is a business-friendly state. He also criticized the current Republican supermajority in the legislature as hindering that.

“All of the stuff that we’re doing in the legislature, you’re keeping people from wanting to come to Missouri,” said Brown. “You need a good will ambassador, somebody who’s a good face for Missouri that says, ‘Hey listen, we want your business. We want you to come here.’ But most importantly we want the people here, and we want to be able to provide affordable housing for those people that are here, once they’re here, and good education for their children.”

Brown faces Republican Dave Wasinger and Libertarian Ken Iverson in November.
