If you need a weekend getaway, a food-fueled road trip across Missouri could be entertaining. Stephen Foutes, director of the Missouri Division of Tourism said that you are never too far away from great food, no matter what you hit the road for.

“You know I think a lot of people think of Missouri and they focus solely on our barbecue culture, which we always put up as one of the best places for barbecue in the country and perhaps the world, but there are a lot of opportunities for people to enjoy varied cuisine,” he told Missourinet.

For authentic Italian cuisine, he recommends checking out the Hill neighborhood in St. Louis or the sixteen counties that make up the German Heritage Corridor for some authentic German food during Oktoberfest.

When there’s grapes, there’s wine.

“Several wine trails on all sides of the state,” he said. “I think when we think of wineries in Missouri, a lot of times we automatically go to the Hermann and Augusta area and rightfully so, they’re well known for wineries such as Stone Hill.”

Missouri’s wine industry dates back over 150 years.

Fouts hopes to make it easy for travelers who don’t know where to go to check out the Missouri Travel Guide for fun restaurants unique to the Show-Me State.

“People don’t have a lot of time,” he explained. “They don’t want to read a lot of heavy copy. So, when you can provide kind of a bullet point list and give people a quick sentence synopsis of what they’re going to find and experience and maybe provide a quick weblink to that businesses website so they can look at the menu, that’s really helpful for travelers.”
