Gov. Mike Parson is headed to Panama this weekend and agriculture is a focus of the trade trip. Parson told Brownfield Ag News that he will be meeting with the nation’s agriculture ministry to discuss transportation and trade.
“Figure out what trade agreements we might be able to come up (with), how we can expand that,” he said. “How important that Panama Canal is for us, because as we expand the river ports in the state of Missouri, it was huge when the Panama Canal expanded theirself.”
There were $37 million in Missouri goods exported to Panama last year – including dairy, grain and oilseed milling products.
He also said that he will visit Missouri National Guard troops stationed there.
“Another main factor I’m going for is our troops,” Parson said. “Our National Guard members have been down there for years now, for decades, helping guard the Panama Canal. I just want to go down there and tell them, ‘Thanks.’ I haven’t had the opportunity to do that, so I want to go down there and tell them that.”
Parson is scheduled to return to Missouri in time for the Governor’s Ham Breakfast, which is being held next Thursday at the State Fair in Sedalia.
