Rep. Adam Schwadron, R-St. Charles, is among the eight Republicans running for Secretary of State in Tuesday’s primary election. He told Missourinet that he’s the experienced choice for the position having served on the elections committee in the Missouri House of Representatives.
“I know that we need safe, secure, transparent elections here in the state of Missouri,” he said. “We need to make sure that everyone has faith and trust in the system. I know we’ve been working to that end in the House Elections Committee as a member of that.”
Schwadron touts his experience as a member of the House Elections Committee, saying that the Secretary of State’s office has a multitude of responsibilities, not just running elections.
“Everyone thinks that the Secretary of State’s office is all elections all the time, but it’s also the business and organization registration,” he explained. “It’s also the securities and investments. It’s also the state library. It’s also the keeper of the seal…you also take a look at the archives. So, there’s a lot that encompasses with this office.”
Schwadron wants to see lawmakers pass legislation that would require voters’ signatures on absentee ballot envelopes to be verified. He also wants to ensure that non-citizens cannot vote in Missouri’s elections, despite it being federally illegal.
“Article Eight of the Constitution says all citizens may vote in Missouri,” Schwadron said. “We want to change that to only. That’s why I sponsored that legislation this past session to do that and while it wasn’t mine that made it through, there is another one that did that is seeking to make that change from all to only.”
Lawmakers passed an elections-related constitutional amendment requiring that only U.S. citizens and residents of Missouri can vote in Missouri elections. That measure will appear on the November ballot.
Schwadron is running in the August 6th Republican primary against Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, Sen. Denny Hoskins, House Speaker Dean Plocher, Greene County Clerk Shane Schoeller, activist Jamie Corley, and attorneys Mike Carter and Valentina Gomez.
Three Democrats are running for Secretary of State: State Rep. Barbara Phifer of St. Louis; Monique Williams, a former auditor with the State Auditor’s office and the city of St. Louis; and Haley Jacobson, a registered nurse in St. Louis. One Libertarian is in the race: Carl Herman Freese of Foristell.
Missouri’s Primary Election is August 6. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Missourinet will have election night results at the top and bottom of the hour on Missourinet.com.
