The pandemic may be over, but remote classes are here to stay, according to Mizzou chancellor Mun Choi. He believes they don’t pose a threat to the in-person classroom experience.
“You know, the thought that online education would be – will create the death of (the) in-person, residential higher education experience has been really, truly, been unfounded, especially based on what’s happened over the past few years,” he told Missourinet affiliate KFRU in Columbia.
Choi described remote learning as ideal for students who may have physical difficulties getting around and for those wanting to enroll in courses for certifications and personal improvement. But in-person learning will always be appealing.
“During the pandemic, students wanted to be with other students. They wanted to be in-person, to have that experience beyond the classroom,” he said. “And so, while online will continue to grow, I do believe that residential in-person learning is very important and will continue to be.”
Choi is also president of the University of Missouri System, which includes the Mizzou campus in Columbia, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Missouri S&T in Rolla.
