Gov. Mike Parson has ordered the U.S. and Missouri flags to be lowered to half-staff at all government buildings in Boone County, the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri in Kingdom City, and firehouses statewide from sunrise to sunset Saturday in honor of Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Matthew Toben.

Toben drowned after his rescue boat overturned while rescuing two victims on July 8. Heavy rain flooded Bear Creek overnight as Tobben helped a Columbia firefighter rescue the victims. The two victims and the Columbia firefighter survived the incident.

The 42-year-old joined the Boone County Fire Protection District on May 1, 2024, as Assistant Chief of Training. He previously worked for the Union Fire Protection District for nearly 20 years. He was also a member of Missouri Task Force 1, having been deployed to seven national disasters.
