Whiteman Air Force Base is preparing for takeoff with its “Wings Over Whiteman” air show this weekend. The free show will be from 11 a.m. to about 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
“The highlight of our show is it’s very bomber-themed with the 35-year anniversary of the B-2 flying. So, we’re very bomber centric. We have the B-29, two B-25s, and then kind of, some WWII historic aircraft. The P-51s fly in as well,” Maj. Simpson told Missourinet.
He expects between 40,000 to 50,000 people to attend the event at the base in west-central Missouri’s Knob Noster.
“These aircraft will come from all over the country, that also are staged around the world as well. It’s not just our home units. So, we have the B-2, the A-10, and our helicopter friends in the Army here,” Simpson said. “The highlight being, of course, your very own B-2. And then we have a B-1 and B-52 as well, and the T-38s that we fly. And of course, you can get up close and personal with the A-10s. We have some big aircraft showing up as well – tankers and cargo aircrafts.”
Gates open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. both days. Vendors and other activities will be at the event. Simpson encourages guests to stay hydrated, bring an umbrella and sunscreen, and a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.
“This is our chance to thank the local community and their support for us. It will give them a chance to talk to our airmen and pilots and everybody else involved in our mission to hopefully inspire y’all to join our ranks sometime in the future,” he said.
There will also be a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Day for students on Friday.
