A firefighter in central Missouri’s Boone County has died during a water rescue operation.

A social media post from the Boone County Fire Protection District identified him as Assistant Fire Chief Matt Tobben. He was conducting a swift water rescue north of downtown Columbia Monday morning when the boat he was in lost power, capsized, and threw him overboard. The post said that Tobben drowned. The two people who were being rescued are okay.

Heavy rains Sunday caused several streets in and around Columbia to flood overnight as flash flooding swept across parts of central and eastern Missouri. More rain is expected into Tuesday as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl are forecast to move across parts of Missouri.
