A parole hearing is scheduled Monday for a woman serving a life sentence for killing a nine-year-old girl.

The hearing is for Alyssa Bustamante, 30, who was sentenced to life in prison for the 2009 murder of Elizabeth Olten in central Missouri’s Cole County. Bustamante was 15 at the time and based on journal entries she killed Olten because she wanted to know what it felt like to take a life.

Bustamante was initially charged with first-degree murder and was certified to stand trial as an adult, but she eventually pled guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The case at the time drew international media attention and was the basis of a low-budget movie released in 2012.

Bustamante is serving her sentence at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in northern Missouri.
