Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has signed legislation to issue special bonds designed to entice the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals to leave Missouri for the Sunflower State.

Kansas lawmakers passed the bill Tuesday during a special legislative session. Momentum in Kansas to try and lure the Chiefs and Royals across the state line began after voters in Jackson County, Missouri rejected a proposal to extend a 3/8ths cent sales tax for the purpose of funding stadium improvements, including a proposed new baseball stadium for the Royals.

Meanwhile, a new proposal is being floated that would create a 3/16ths of a cent sales tax to raise funds for renovations to Arrowhead Stadium or fund construction of a new stadium for the Chiefs in Jackson County. It would not include any funding for a new baseball park for the Royals.

A first vote on the proposal is scheduled Monday by the Jackson County Legislature.
