The Pony Express rides again!

Three riders on horseback set off from northwest Missouri’s St. Joseph on Monday and will be replaced by other riders and horses over the next nine days, all the way to Sacramento, California, if all goes according to plan. The teams of riders will follow the original Pony Express route as closely as possible.

The Pony Express served as a rapid mail delivery service for only 18 months, from April 1860 to October 1861. It shut down after a telegraph line linking New York and San Francisco went into service.

The current riders are wearing GPS devices, and you can follow their progress here.
