The future of sports in Jackson County, Missouri is at stake.

Voters will decide Tuesday whether to extend a sales tax that would help fund a new baseball stadium for the Kansas City Royals and renovations to the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium. If passed, the 3/8ths of 1% sales tax would be in effect for the next 40 years.

The Royals plan to build a new ballpark near downtown while the Chiefs are seeking major upgrades to their half-century old stadium. Both franchises have hinted that they may leave Jackson County if the proposal is defeated.
