An eviction notice turned into a shooting Thursday afternoon near Kansas City – killing an Independence police officer and a Jackson County Circuit Court worker. Two other officers have been injured by gunfire, one critically.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Justin Ewing said the shootout started when court workers were serving an eviction notice at an Independence home.

“Initially, just civil process servers from the circuit court were on scene at that time that that civil process server was shot,” he said. “They called for assistance at which time the Independence Police Department responded to assist and that is when additional gunfire occurred and two Independence police officers were shot responding to assist.”

Kansas City Police Department Captain Jake Becchina said multiple agencies responded to the shooting.

“They’re our next door neighbors,” he said. “They would come help us if we called for help and same with them. When an assistance request goes out, everybody who’s available, goes to help and they work to bring that situation under control, as quickly and safely as possible, with as little injury as possible.”

A suspect has minor injuries and is in custody.
