Missouri U.S. Senator Josh Hawley is calling on the U.S. Justice Department to block the planned merger of Capital One and Discover Card.

The bank holding company that issues Capital One Visa and Mastercards announced Monday that it would buy Discover Financial Services in a $35.3 billion deal.

In a letter to the Justice Department, Hawley – a Republican – called the planned merger “destructive corporate consolidation at its starkest” which would create a new credit card “juggernaut” with “unprecedented power to extort American consumers.”

The merger is also strongly opposed by far-left U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts. She said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Capital One/Discover merger would “increase fees and credit costs for American families.”

In a statement, Capital One said the merger would “drive more sales for merchants” and create “great deals for consumers and small businesses.”
