The campaign for a Republican-led ballot initiative that sought to allow some abortions to resume in Missouri has been suspended, according to multiple media outlets.

Republican activist Jamie Corley heads the group Missouri Women and Family Research Fund (MWFRF), and had filed the initiative as a counterweight to Missouri’s current law that bans almost all abortions. Her proposal would have allowed exceptions for rape and incest while banning abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The move comes as a competing ballot initiative from Missourians for Constitutional Freedom has gained momentum and raised more than $3 million, according to the organization’s Facebook page. This one would enshrine the right to an abortion in the Missouri Constitution but give lawmakers the ability to pass laws that would regulate abortions on viable fetuses.
