A group of poultry farmers is suing Tyson Foods for shutting down its former chicken processing plant in southeast Missouri’s Dexter last fall.

The plaintiffs argue that they invested millions of dollars to build and maintain chicken houses, provide needed equipment, and pay for labor costs associated with raising chickens based on promises that Tyson would continue to operate in Dexter.

Tyson announced last year it was closing the factory in October, along with a larger one in southwest Missouri’s Noel.

The state’s Department of Economic Development announced last week that Cal-Maine Foods would turn the former Tyson site in Dexter into an egg processing plant and create 96 jobs.
