Jackson County lawmakers closed out 2023 by again delaying a vote on whether to extend a sales tax designed to encourage the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs to stay in Jackson County.

The 3/8ths of one percent sales tax would go towards stadium improvements and be extended for another 40 years. But it would also require voter approval, which would take place in a referendum tentatively scheduled for April 2nd.

The Royals are considering two sights for a potential new stadium, one of them across the Missouri River in neighboring Clay County. Politicians and business leaders in Kansas, meanwhile, have been trying to persuade the Kansas City Chiefs to build a new stadium on their side of the state line.
