Missouri’s current state budget year includes $25 million to build a new meat laboratory.

During a Missouri House budget subcommittee hearing, state Department of Agriculture Director Chris Chinn talked about the one-time funding being used for the planning, construction, and design of a lab at the University of Missouri’s Columbia campus.

“So we are in that process right now with the University of Missouri,” she said. “They are in the process, I believe, of picking out their architecture right now.”

The laboratory will be used for the training and research for the food science and animal science programs.

Rep. Greg Sharpe, R-Ewing, said Missouri has needed a meat laboratory for a while.

“This is kind of the hot business and we’re trying to reclaim a certain industry back from Kansas that we gave away many years ago,” he said. “Even with our drought, the one thing we do have here is water, in general, so we think it will be a great thing.”

The project is expected to break ground soon.
