Jackson County is considering whether to extend a sales tax to help fund efforts to keep the Royals and Chiefs in Kansas City.
The county legislature is scheduled to hear a proposed ordinance at its meeting on Monday. It would extend Jackson County’s sales tax to 3/8ths of one percent for a 40-year period, with the additional revenue going towards stadium improvements. It would also require voter approval, with a pending referendum scheduled for April 2nd.
The Royals are considering two sites for building a new ballpark, one of them in downtown Kansas City and the other across the river in Clay County.
Officials in Kansas have made overtures to the Chiefs to leave Arrowhead and build a new stadium on their side of the state line.
