Some Missourians will hit the fields this weekend for the state’s elk firearms hunting season. The firearms portion of the season runs December 9-17.

Missouri has about 200 elk. The Missouri Department of Conservation offers five permits to hunt bull elk in the state.

The agency had 8,562 elk hunting permit applications submitted this year – lower than the 2021 and 2022 applications of roughly 9,700.

The permits will allow for the harvest of one bull elk with at least one antler being six inches or greater in length. All elk-hunting permits can be used in Carter, Reynolds, and Shannon Counties, except the refuge portion of Peck Ranch Conservation Area.
