A former Kansas City police detective will have to serve a six-year prison sentence for shooting an unarmed Black man.

The ruling was released Tuesday by the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District. Eric DeValkenaere, who’s white, was found guilty two years ago of involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action for fatally shooting Cameron Lamb in 2019.

Jackson County prosecutors defended his conviction, while Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey argued that DeValkenaere’s conviction should be tossed out. There’s no word yet if Bailey will appeal the ruling to the Missouri Supreme Court.
