According to the Library of Congress, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designated Columbus Day a national holiday in 1934 to commemorate when explorer Christopher Columbus arrived in North America.
Some cities and states call the holiday Indigenous Peoples’ Day to recognize America’s first inhabitants and call attention to the losses experienced by Native Americans when Europeans came to the U.S. It has been federally recognized since 2021.
