Missouri’s U.S. House members in Washington, D.C. are prepping to vote for a new speaker, possibly this week. The names mentioned for the next speaker include Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise and Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan.
Three Missouri Republican U.S. House members have come out in support of Scalise as the next speaker – Blaine Luetkemeyer, Ann Wagner, and Sam Graves.
“Not that I’m against these other guys,” Luetkemeyer told Missourinet affiliate KWIX in Moberly. “They’re all good friends of mine as well. I think they would be okay but I think Steve (Scalise) is, to me, is the pickup alert.”
Some Republicans have suggested making former President Donald Trump the next speaker.
“I think it may be more of a circus,” said Luetkemeyer. “Not that I’m against Trump. I think he should be focusing on his presidential run. “I think we need to settle our own problems within our own house. I hope he doesn’t get in the middle of it because I think that just stirs it all up, makes it chaotic, and brings a whole different element to this we don’t need right now. We got enough problems that we’ve created ourselves and we don’t need them in the middle of creating some more.”
Scalise and Jordan voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election results.
Missouri Congressmen Eric Burlison, Jason Smith, and Mark Alford have not announced who they plan to vote for speaker.
