Boy playing with gun accidently shoots, injures sister

A seven-year-old girl is in stable condition from being accidentally shot in the chest by her six-year-old brother at a home near Springfield early this morning.

Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott says the boy was playing with the gun after an adult visiting the home unknowingly dropped it. Arnott says thankfully, the victim’s injuries don’t appear to be life threatening.

The sheriff’s message to gun owners: “It is your responsibility to always maintain proper storage and handling of your guns. Do not leave them lying around when there are small children around. Teach your children proper safety with weapons and always assume they are loaded. This was a very unfortunate event, but we are so thankful the seven-year-old will survive.”
