The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins, 29-13, on Sunday afternoon to win the AFC West for a second consecutive season.
It marks the first time in franchise history that Kansas City has won the division in back-to-back years and guarantees a playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium this January.
Quarterback Alex Smith completed 25 of 39 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown in the victory, finding tight end Travis Kelce for a score early in the second quarter.
Smith and Kelce both reached some milestones of their own in the contest, as Smith eclipsed 4,000 yards passing and Kelce notched 1,000 yards receiving on the season.
When combined with tailback Kareem Hunt and wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s efforts this year, the Chiefs are just the second team in NFL history to feature a 4,000-yard passer and a 1,000-yard running back, wide receiver and tight end, joining the 1981 San Diego Chargers.
Hunt rushed for 91 yards on the afternoon, punching in a one-yard score in the first half. Hill hauled in six catches for a team-leading 109 yards, including a 52-yard grab that set up Kelce’s score.
Kicker Harrison Butker added five field goals for Kansas City, breaking the franchise record for made field goals in a single season (36). The rookie placekicker did so in just 12 games, signing with the Chiefs prior to Week 4.
Cornerback Marcus Peters forced a fumble and recovered another in the contest, making it five total takeaways for the third-year defensive back in his last two games with two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
The Chiefs will travel to Denver to take on the Broncos next Sunday in the regular season finale before hosting a playoff game the following week at Arrowhead.
