ESPN Analyst and former NFL head coach Herm Edwards is going to interview for the open position at Arizona State. Edwards confirmed he will meet with Sun Devils’ athletic director Ray Anderson about the head coaching job this weekend. The school recently fired Todd Graham, who had a 46-and-31 record in six seasons at ASU. Edwards spent eight seasons as an NFL head coach with the Jets and Chiefs, compiling a 54-and-74 record. He has not coached since a 2-and-14 campaign with Kansas City in 2008, and last coached at the college level in 1989 as an assistant at San Jose State.
Former Royal Carlos Beltran is a candidate for the Yankees’ manager’s job. Beltran, who began his career with the Royals and played with the Cardinals as well, retired after the season and winning a World Series with the Astros. Beltran will be the sixth candidate to interview for the job after Joe Girardi was fired in October after 10 years in the Yankees’ dugout. Multiple outlets report the Yankees will meet with Beltran on Wednesday. The team has already interviewed several candidates including bench coach Rob Thomson, former Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge, and ESPN analyst Aaron Boone. Beltran hit .279 with 435 home runs and 1,587 RBI over 2,586 career games.
Nobody wants the Tennessee job—Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is the next candidate for the head coaching position at Tennessee, He played linebacker at Tennessee (1978-79) and began his coaching career there in 1980. Tennessee also met with Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and Purdue coach Jeff Brohm, and Duke David Cutcliffe after its plans to hire Greg Schiano deteriorated.
The New York Giants are benching two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Eli Manning. Head coach Ben McAdoo announced yesterday that Geno Smith will start at quarterback this Sunday against the Raiders in Oakland. The move will end a streak of 210 consecutive regular-season starts for Manning, which ranks second in NFL history. McAdoo said the team will look at Smith over the last five games of the year and also give rookie Davis Webb an opportunity to play. The 36-year-old Manning has thrown for 2,411 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games this season for the 2-and-9 Giants.
