The Executive Director of the Missouri School Boards’ Association has issued a statement critical of what she says is an effort by Governor Eric Greitens to replace the Commissioner of Education.

Melissa Randol says the Governor’s apparent candidate supports expansion of charter schools. She contends such a move could have a negative impact on public schools, especially in rural areas where charter expansion would encourage school district consolidation.
The statement says some members of the State Board of Education are trying to call a special meeting next Monday to consider the removal of the Commissioner of Education.
The release also praises newly appointed State Board Member Tim Sumners in his efforts to call upon his fellow newly appointed members to “follow the Constitutional duties of the State Board”.
Sumners told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Sunday night that he’s concerned his stance on the matter could cost him his appointment. “I am fully aware my position may not last long,” said Sumners.
Greitens, a Republican, campaigned to become governor on a platform that included enlarging the presence of charter schools in Missouri.
