The Missouri Tigers won their men’s basketball season opener on Friday Night at Mizzou Arena with a 74-59 win over the Iowa State Cyclones.
As a team the Tigers shot 53% for the game that saw Michael Porter Jr play just the first two minutes before exiting with what was described as a hip injury. There were reports that Porter Jr had been receiving treatment for a back issue.
The atmosphere inside was electric even several minutes prior to tip-off
Following the game, head coach Cuonzo Martin said Porter Jr notified him that his leg wasn’t feeling right. Since Porter Jr was already listed as a starter, he played the opening moments scoring a basket and grabbing an offensive rebound before exiting.
In his absence, junior Kevin Puryear led the Tigers with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Jordan Barnett scored 15 and freshman center Jeremiah Tilmon scored 14 on 7-of-9 shooting.
Defensively, Mizzou limited Iowa State to just 39% shooting for the game.
The Tigers are back at home on Monday night at 8 p.m. when they host Wagner.
