Tennis teammates battle it out for three hours in Class 1 singles tournament. Princeton and Polo football put on a show (AUDIO)

October 17, 2016 By Bill Pollock

After winning back-to-back state championships in the Class 1 Girls Team Tennis Championships on Thursday, teammates Samantha Remis and Gabriella Thornton of John Burroughs High School took to the courts on Saturday in Springfield for a marathon championship in singles.

In a three-hour match, Thornton outlasted Remis two sets to one with the final set moving to an 11-9 tie-breaker.

Jane King and Amelia Smith from Barstow won the doubles title in Class 1.

Rock Bridge won the Class 2 title for the third year in a row by not losing a match through the state tournament, with Faith Wright and Katherine Dudley taking doubles’ honors.

In football, it wasn’t the highest scoring game in MSHSAA history, but the 153 points put up between Polo’s 80-73 win over Princeton was good for second best.  There were plenty of state records including nine touchdown passes thrown while Polo racked up 675 yards through the air.  The best thing about this rivalry is that both teams will meet up again in Class 1 district play.

Here to tell us more about high school sports from the weekend is Jason West.
