The St. Louis Cardinals notched a Labor Day victory, topping the Pirates 12-6 in the series opener at Pittsburgh.
Adam Wainwright worked through trouble to register his 10th victory of the season. Wainwright gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings.
A day after Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny said his club needed more offense, they responded with three in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth and eighth.
Matt Adams and Jedd Gyrko each hit homeruns in the victroy.
