A longtime Missouri State University professor has been stabbed to death in Springfield. Officers found Marc Cooper, 66, dead inside the house last night. His wife, Nancy, was also stabbed. She has non-life threatening injuries. Police say Edward Gutting, 43, was arrested at the scene and has been booked into the Greene County Jail.

Dr. Marc Cooper is described as a longtime professor, spending 35 years on the faculty. Missouri State University says Cooper retired in 2014, but was still active at MSU, serving as the managing editor of the eJournal in Public Affairs.

Gutting is an instructor of modern and classical language. Pending the outcome of a police investigation, Gutting has been placed on administrative leave at MSU.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Greene County Medical Examiner’s Office.
