Another big afternoon for the Cardinals, as they take both games against Houston in this short series, with an 8-2 win Wednesday afternoon at Minute Maid Park. Carlos Martinez got the win, tossing seven innings allowing one run.

Martinez got plenty of support thanks to a homer from Jeremy Hazelbaker in the fourth off Houston starter Doug Fister.  The game was blown open in the seventh inning on a three-run homer from Brandon Moss, his 22nd.  Stephen Piscotty drove in two runs, and since being called up for the Cubs series, Randal Grichuk is now 7 for 22 with four doubles, a triple, two homers and seven RBIs.

Matt Holliday had surgery today on his broken right thumb with the hope that he can come back this season. Only hitting .242, but he’s second on the team with 19 home runs and 60 RBI this season. Reliever Seth Maness will have Tommy John surgery tomorrow with a recovery time of 12-15 months.
