The bullpen is the difference in Sunday night’s Cardinals win

August 15, 2016 By Bill Pollock

Stephen Piscotty hit a three-run homer, and Brandon Moss followed with a solo shot in a five-run eighth inning  as the Cardinals beat the Cubs 6-4 on Sunday night.

Piscotty hit his 17th homer off setup man Hector Rondon (2-3), who came in with a 3-1 lead.

It was the second game in a row the Cardinals beat up the Cubs bullpen.

Pinch-hitters Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia singled, and Piscotty’s bomb to deep left-center field put the Cardinals ahead 4-3.

Brandon Moss cleared the wall one out later and the Cardinals tacked another one to Travis Wood.

The Cardinals bullpen kept it a game the inning before.

Down 3-1, Matt Bowman got out of a bases-load jam, holding the Cuns scoreless.

Mike Leake got the win. Leake allowed three runs on six hits in six innings and retired 16 in a row over one stretch.
