Zach Duke’s pitch appeared to hit the inside corner of the plate, but Anthony Rizzo drew a bases-loaded walk for a walk-off win as the Cubs won their 10th straight with a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals in 11 innings at Wrigley Field.
Matt Holliday suffered a fracture in his right thumb in the 10th inning after a 94-mph pitch from Cubs reliever Mike Montgomery clipped the slugger. He has flown back to St. Louis for further evaluations.
Carlos Martinez worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings, leaving Cubs runners stranded at third as the Cardinals staked a 2-0 lead off Jon Lester.
In the sixth, Chris Coghlan singled in two after trying to call for timeout. He had to step back in the box during Martinez’ delivery after the umpire denied his request. He drove the ball to right field. Next, slow running David Ross dropped down a bunt and Martinez hurried his throw to first allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Randall Grichuk, just recalled from Memphis, hit the tying home run for the Cardinals in the seventh inning.
The Cardinals and Cubs will play a day game in Chicago this afternoon, provided the rain stays away. It’s the second of their four-game series at Wrigley Field, with first pitch at 1:20 pm. Adam Wainwright gets the ball for St. Louis. He’s 9-and-6 with a 4.34 ERA. Chicago starts Jake Arrieta, who’s 13-and-5 with a 2.59 ERA.
