Matt Carpenter and Jhonny Peralta each hit solo shots and Jaime Garcia limited the Reds to just two hits over eight innings as the Cardinals take two-of-three from Cincinnati with a 3-2 Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.
Garcia improved to 9-8, and the Cardinals handed Anthony DeSclafani his first loss of the season. DeSclafani was previously 6-and-0.
Carpenter led off the game with his 15th homer and Peralta hit his 200th for his career in the fourth to put St. Louis up 3-1. Â The Reds scored one more in the ninth, but Seung Hwan Oh picked up his 10th save.
The win moved the Cardinals back into a tie for the second Wild Card spot.
The Cardinals begin a nine-game, three-city road trip tonight in Chicago. They take on the Cubs in the first of a four-game series at Wrigley Field. Carlos Martinez will oppose Chicago’s Jon Lester at 7:05 p.m. The Cardinals will also visit Houston and Philadelphia on this road swing.
The Cubs enter play tonight with a nine-game win streak.
