Miami’s Adeiny Hechavarria, whose throwing error in the eighth inning allowed Stephen Piscotty to score from second to tie the game at 4-4, scored the winning run when centerfielder Tommy Pham misplayed a ball in left-center allowing the winning run to score in the Marlins 5-4 win over the Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth.
Pham got his glove on the ball but made a half effort to dive with left fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker closing in.
Derek Dietrich’s pinch hit triple off Matt Bowman got past both fielders as the ball rolled to the wall with Hechavarria scoring from first.
“I couldn’t dive, because if I’d have dove, I’d have dove right into him,” Pham said. “So I had to slide. It should have been caught by one of the two of us.”
“That ball has got to be caught.”
The team split their four game series with Miami maintaining a one-game lead over the Cardinals for the second wild card spot.
