A southeast Missouri Congressman who was a delegate at last week’s GOP National Convention in Cleveland says voters want changes in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Jason Smith (R-Salem) was a delegate. The 36-year-old Smith, who’s the second-youngest GOP member in Congress, also spoke to millennials and to rural groups in Cleveland.

“People were excited,” Smith says. “They’re looking forward to the next several months of this campaign and getting out and supporting conservatives up and down the ticket. It’s going to be a very interesting year.”

Smith says the Convention featured numerous speakers from all different walks of life, who expressed frustration with the nation’s direction during the past eight years.

Congressman Smith also criticized Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s speech at the Convention, describing Cruz’s actions as “selfish”. Cruz last week refused to endorse Donald Trump.

“I view it as a point that he (Cruz) walked out the cliff, but you know what, his supporters aren’t,” Smith says. “This is a time to move forward with conservative agendas with our principles of limited government and free markets.”

Smith says voters have only two options in November: Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. Smith says his constituents want Trump, whom he calls an outsider.

U.S. Rep. Sam Graves (R-Tarkio) was also a delegate in Cleveland.
