As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a woman has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $1.5 million, claiming that Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez passed on at least one sexually transmitted disease. Martinez’s attorney Ruben Scolavino told the website TMZ, the allegations are not true.
“I can tell you most assuredly the allegations are 100% false.”
Martinez left the team on Friday to attend a court hearing in Florida and was back in time to pitch in Sunday’s game against Washington.
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak received a call from Martinez’ agent on Thursday night. This weekend Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch, they are letting the pitcher’s attorneys handle the situation.
“My understanding is that he and his attorney are working on it,” said Mozeliak.
ESPN is reporting that Major League Baseball will not investigate because this situation falls outside the league’s domestic violence policy, and because the allegations came about in a civil suit.
