Rare bullpen flub by Royals cost them series finale in Oakland

April 17, 2016 By Bill Pollock

The Royals bullpen couldn’t hold the lead in the seventh inning and then gave up the lead in the eighth losing 3-2 to the A’s on Sunday afternoon in Oakland.

Leadoff hitter Billy Burns tripled off Joakim Soria and scored on a Josh Reddick sac fly to put the A’s ahead.  In the seventh, Chris Coghlan hit a ground rule double off starter Kris Medlen.

Kelvin Herrera replaced Medlen and pinch hitter Jed Lowrie replaced Billy Butler and singled home Coghlan to tie the game at 2-2.  Medlen was charged with two runs, one earned in 6.1 innings.

The Royals were held to six hits.  One of those came on Mike Moustaksas’ fourth homer in the third to put the Royals up 2-0 after Alex Gordon drove in a run in the second off starter Chris Bassitt.
