Stephen Piscotty hit a three-run homer in the second inning to put the Cardinals up 4-0, but Adam Wainwright couldn’t hold the lead and the Cincinnati Reds held on for a 9-8 win Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium.
Wainwright was charged with seven runs in 5.1 innings and has struggled in his first three starts, coming out of the game with an 8.27 ERA. The day started well, as Wainwright set down the first eight batters he faced before allowing a two-out single to Reds starter Brandon Finnegan.
Joey Votto doubled and scored on a Jay Bruce single in the fourth. Bruce would later score to cut the Cardinals lead to 4-2. Zack Cozart and Brandon Phillips added RBI doubles in the fifth to tie the game. The Reds hit nine doubles, tying a team record. Phillips doubled later in a four-run sixth to make it 8-4 Cincinnati.
It was 8-6 in the ninth, when Jay Bruce homered off Jonathan Broxton. That run was big insurance for the Reds. Brandon Moss homered off J.J. Hoover to pull the Cardinals to within one. It was Moss’ 4th homer of the season.
Piscotty had two hits and drove in four runs. Aledmys Diaz had two more hits. His average sits at .406.
