Edinson Volquez walks off the mound after a strikeout
Edinson Volquez tuned up in his final Cactus League start before Opening Night on Sunday by going five innings and giving up five hits and two runs. Lorenzo Cain went 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs as the Royals rolled to an 11-3 win against the Padres on Monday. It was a split-squad game for the Royals, whose other team fell to the Mariners, 6-4.
Volquez says he finally has it figured out just in time for the season.
“Finally,” Volquez said. “I think I got better throughout Spring Training. I was better than last year. And the year before. And the year before. And the year before. It doesn’t matter what happens in Spring Training. I’m just trying to move forward to Opening Day. I think I’m ready.”
Meanwhile, the New York Mets Opening Day starter will in fact be ace Matt Harvey.
According to Yahoo Sports, Harvey’s been dealing with a bladder infection that led to a blood clot in his bladder. After a couple days of discomfort and discovering blood in his urine, the clot passed and he was given the all clear to return to work.
As of Monday it was undecided. Harvey was passed over on Monday’s start against the Cardinals. He was scratched for a health issue, unrelated to his pitching arm. GM Sandy Alderson confirmed Harvey may have to travel to New York for further examination. Manager Terry Collins said it is “hard to say” whether Harvey will be ready to start Opening Day.
