More than 87-percent of Missouri precincts have reported in and the only state that’s been too close to call today is Missouri.
There is less than a one-percent difference – 3,230 votes – between Republicans Donald Trump (41.320%) and Texas Senator Ted Cruz (40.952%). The next-closest candidate is Ohio Governor John Kasich with more than nine-percent, followed by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who suspended his campaign earlier tonight.
If Cruz wins in Missouri it would be his only win today. He told supporters, “It’s not about the cronyism and the bailouts that far too many Republicans have done over and over again to benefit the rich and powerful. Instead, less government is more freedom.”
Trump could still win more delegates, however. The Republican winner in a close race gets 12 delegates, then candidates get five delegates each from the Congressional districts they win, and Trump is carrying more of those.
In the Democratic race, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ lead over Hillary Clinton is fewer than four percentage points – a difference of about 19,000 votes.
Clinton and Trump have won in three states today.
