Rams’ wide receiver Stedman Bailey was reportedly riding in a car with two young relatives and a cousin in Miami, Florida, when a shooting occurred. Bailey was shot in the head and is in critical, but stable condition.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweeted the driver of the car reportedly has life-threatening injuries after being shot “many times” while shielding children from bullets.  There has been no additional report on his condition.

Bailey is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday. The Rams organization says it has spoken with Bailey and in a statement, said it is still learning about the situation.

The organization, on its website, was promoting the hashtag #pray4stedman, and that was being used by many teammates and players from other NFL teams to express support for Stedman on Twitter.

Bailey is a third-year player for the Rams and had 12 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown this season before beginning a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Miami is about 24 minutes from his hometown, Miramar.
