How bad are things for the 49ers? They’re benching Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert

Following San Francisco’s 27-6 loss in St. Louis on Sunday to the Rams, the once proud franchise is cleaning house and reshuffling their lineup.

The 49ers (2-6) will bench quarterback Colin Kaepernick and go with Parkway West product and former Missouri Tiger Blaine Gabbert.  He will start at home against theAtlanta Falcons (6-2) on Sunday.

Kaepernick threw for 162 yards on 20-for-41 passing and rushed for 28 yards against the Rams.

When Gabbert starts he’ll be without a big target and a guy who can bail out QBs. On Monday, the 49ers traded tight end Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos.

Gabbert is now in his fifth-year and was taken in the first round of the 2011 draft by Jacksonville.  Gabbert’s last action came in week 7 of last season.  He threw a 20-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of a blowout loss to Denver.

How effective do we believe Gabbert will be?  Not very.  In his career he has made 27 starts with a 5-22 record with a completion percentage of 53.2%.  He has thrown 24 interceptions and 23 touchdown passes.
