The Highway Patrol says the crash began around 9:15 when one westbound vehicle hydroplaned. It crashed into the trailer of a semi. Another semi that swerved to avoid hitting the first vehicle struck a truck and then crossed into the eastbound lanes where it collided with a third semi, head-on. A chain reaction followed as three more vehicles hit those that had already crashed.

46-year-old Charles Moore of Nicholasville, Kentucky and 46-year-old Robert Brainerd of St. Louis were the drivers of the semis that collided head-on. They both died at the scene.

54-year-old Mark Goddard of Osawatomie, Kansas, and Clara and Sonny Conn, both 71 and from Moorehead, Kentucky, sustained what the Patrol calls “serious” injuries. 42-year-old Brandi Clements of Williamsburg, who was driving the vehicle that hydroplaned, and 23-year-old Aaron Shipps of Osawatomie, sustained “moderate” injuries.
