Royals manager Ned Yost wanted an appeal but couldn’t get the umpire’s attention because the crowd was too loud. Then home plate umpire Dan Iassogna apologized to catcher Salvador Perez for missing the call, according to Royals starter Edinson Volquez.
That all took place during the pivotal sixth inning of Game 5 of the ALCS when Volquez walked Jose Bautista. The Royals gave up four runs and ended up losing 7-1.
Don’t blame the umpire.
First, as you can tell from the picture, the full count pitch to Bautista is close. The Fox Trax strike zone on the TV screen showed strike, Bautista even admitted after the game he may have caught a break and here’s what Volquez said about the conversation between Salvy and the ump.
Even though Dan Iassogna may have admitted he missed the call, its what led up to that pitch and what happened after that truly changed the outlook of the game. I explain more in my video below.
