Jarrod Dyson, a last minute addition to the starting lineup on Tuesday, led off the 13th inning with a single and scored all the way from first when Cincinnati reliever Ryan Mattheus threw the ball down the right field line after a sacrifice bunt by Kris Medlen. Medlen later scored on an infield single from Ben Zobrist as the Royals beat the Reds 3-1.
For Medlen, it was his first win in the majors since Sept. 17, 2013. What’s more incredible is that this was also the first blown save for Reds closer Aroldis Chapman at home since Sept. 7, 2012. Chapman had closed 56 straight save appearances at Great American Ballpark, until Zobrist took him deep for a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1 in the ninth.
Zobrist is turning out to be a nice pick up for the club after a trade with Oakland.
“He’s made a pretty big difference,” manager Ned Yost said. “He’s become a pretty big piece for us.”
Edinson Volquez, who played for the Reds, allowed four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in six innings. Greg Holland finished for his 27th save.
