Matt Holliday goes down in left field with a right quad injury
Matt Holliday’s night ended on the field where his career began. The Cardinals left fielder walked off gingerly in the bottom of the second inning of Monday’s 11-3 loss to the Rockies at Coors Field.
The club is calling a right quad strain. He suffered the injury after he went down chasing what turned into a double off the bat of Carlos Gonzalez. Manager Mike Matheny didn’t want to speculate to the extent of the injury, considering the club lost first baseman Matt Adams for the year with a quad injury
“It’s something with the quad,” manager Mike Matheny said after the game. “We need to talk to the medical team a little more too before we jump to any conclusions.”
Holliday was rolling on the ground for a couple of minutes before eventually turning on his back where Matheny and trainers checked on him. There was nice applause from the Colorado crowd. Holliday came up with the Rockies and played with the team from 2004-2008.
“Fortunately he was able to walk off, which is always a good sign, but it was an unpleasant walk,” Matheny said. “It’s scary when you see a guy as tough as him go down.”
John Lackey lasted just four innings and gave up ten runs, eight earned on 12 hits. Each team hit two homers in the altitude, including the first of the year from Jon Jay, who entered the game after Holliday’s injury. Kolten Wong hit his seventh of the year in the fourth.
