The United States Geologic Survey says the magnitude 4.0 earthquake happened at 10:51 p.m. Wednesday night in Missouri’s Bootheel.

The quake was centered near Steele in the state’s southeasternmost county of Pemiscot at more than seven miles below the ground.

The National Weather Service said there were no reports of damage as of late last night.

The quake occurred near the heart of the New Madrid seismic region, where the most powerful recorded earthquakes occurred in the early 1800s.
